Sept 3, 1939 - British declares war on Germany at 11 AM, France declares war on Germany 6 hours later.
Sept 17, 1939 - Soviet Union invades Poland from the east.
October 6, 1939 - Hitlers peace offer based on a German victory in Poland, is rejected by Britain & France.
October 11, 1939 - Albert Einstein and others inform Franklin D. Roosevelt of the possibility of creating an atomic bomb.
Nov 30, 1939 - Soviet troops invade Finland.
May 15, 1940 - Holland surrenders to Germany.
May 28, 1940 - Belgium Surrenders to Germany.
June 3, 1940 - Norway surrenders to Germany.
August 26, 1940 - First all night air raid on London.
December 20, 1940 - In the United States, the Office of Production Management is set up to coordinate defense manufacturing and supply material aid to Great Britain. Defense manufacturing will eventually invigorate the United States economy by employing many previously unemployed workers, including an increasing number of women, coining the phrase Rosie the Riveter
